"the Self is simply a kind of perpetual signifier ever wandering the earth in search of a transcendental signified that it can never find.."
Stuart Hall couldnapos;t have explained apos;identityapos; in a more apt way.
Many of us tend to conceptualise "Identityapos; as something that is immutable, something that is a given.
But the fact (or maybe what is a fact to me) is that Identity is in actuality something thatapos;s mutable.
Identity is a process of identification.
It isnapos;t just about learning your place in society..it is a never-ending process of learning and re-learning the different roles u play.
For eg, your identity being "single" and being "attached" or "married" is different.
With temporal and spatial differences, there will in turn be noticeable differences in who u identify yourself to be.
Which leads me to the point of judging the self based on the apos;otherapos;.
Without the apos;othersapos;, there can be no conceptualising of what the apos;selfapos; is.
Without any form of differentiation and sense of who u are not, one can never know what one really is.
Similarly, without positionality, there can be no enunciation.
Perhaps thatapos;s the reason why there are still people subscribing to the whole notion of race and caste (excluding the work of the government and other moral regulating institutions of course). Similarly, without Pecolaapos;s ugliness, Claudia and the rest can never be beautiful (and iapos;m not talking about just superficial beauty here). Without the apos;filthapos; of others, one can never hope to justify their supposed apos;pristineapos; self.
Ah..well.
At the end of the day, itapos;s neither a bad nor good thing.
I believe strongly in the theory of discourse.
What matters at the end of it all is this - (1) Who uses this comparative judging, and
